Description

Antakalnio St. 27

The church of Lord Jesus and the Trinitarian monastery were built during 1694-1717 under the funding of J.K.Sapiega. Following P.Pertis' project abundant figural and ornamental moulding was applied. Italian artists built and decorated the church and the monastery ensemble. The representative artists of the Comask school, the best in stucco modelling, worked here. Stucco master artists G. Maria Galli and Pietro Perti with brothers Antonio Giovanni and Karl, the sons of Stefano Perti, arrived to Lithuania in the middle of the 17 th .

While living in Lithuania P.Perti created his family and later died and was buried here. The Vilnius church of the Trinitarian monastery thus was the last creation of Lombardian artists in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This rotunda type cupola church was built under the model of Trinitarian churches of Rome. Their author was Architect F.Barninis. The church had the statue of the angel, which is blessing a Trinitarian monk and a prisoner redeemed by the latter, creating a symbol of monkhood. Artist P.Pertis, the decorator of the church of SS Peter and Paul, ornamented this church with beautiful decorations too.

Pope Inocent XII made a present of a wooden statue of Christ, which became famous for its miracles "Ecce Homo", to the Trinitarians of Vilnius in 1700. The statue was said to have growing hair. This was the Saviour's church which had four altars decorated with P.Smuglevičius' pictures. Russians took over the church in 1864 and renamed it as St Mikhail the Archangel' orthodox church. The statue of Christ was transferred to the church of SS Peter and Paul. Already in 1744 one of the walls of the Trinitarian church had a beautiful marble gravestone of Aleksandras Sapiega, the son of Marshal of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the founder of the church. During the reconstruction of 1864 the gravestone as well as many decorative interior elements were destroyed. The church was given back to the Catholics in 1919 and became the church of a war hospital. After Word War II the church remained in the barracks zone and was used as a warehouse of the military school. Only in 1975 the military district of Riga was forced to make some repair works in the church. It was roofed with tin, newly windowed, its façade was repainted, however, the heating system was not installed. After the Russian army left Lithuania, the church and the monastery were transferred to the parishioners. A seminary was founded here in 1993 07 16. When a new building for the seminary was built in Jeruzalė district in 1998, St John's Congregation was established in the monastery.

The church was reconsecrated in the year 2000.
